Coach Don Casey, a veteran of 35 years of coaching at the NBA, college, international and high school levels, joined NBA.com as expert analyst for the 1997 NBA Finals, offering an inside look at the basic offensive concepts of the Chicago Bulls.

Coach Casey says: Many teams play defense in back of the low post in order to limit the scoring threat. This can be a mistake with Chicago, for the post-up players are excellent passers and the concepts designed for the remaining players are sound and productive.

OPTION ONE: Steve Kerr (#25) makes the entry pass to Luc Longley (#13) in the low post. Longley's first options are to look for the backdoor cutter from the corner (in this case, Toni Kukoc (#7)) or take the ball to the basket.
 
 

After passing, one of Kerr's options is to set a guard "split" screen across to free Scottie Pippen (#33). 
 

OPTION TWO: The more common "double cut" is illustrated here with the same players aligned differently (the versatility of Chicago's players aids the offense's fluidity, as the Bulls often fill the triangle's different roles interchangeably).
    After the entry pass to Michael Jordan (#23), the "double cut" occurs as Kukoc goes backdoor and Pippen makes a "dive" cut into the lane and, if he is not open, screens for Longley, who flashes into the lane. 

In this instance, Jordan can now hit Longley, an excellent high post passer, or go cross-court to Kerr, an excellent three-point shooter, as the triangle is reformed on the opposite side. 
   Or Michael, isolated in the post, can simply go to work. We'd recommend watching out for the turnaround fadeaway!
